I think the fear is being a burden. The message was conveyed clearly. I like the how the person who would help Mary looks annoyed, it adds to the effect. I would maybe make the fear word transparent to supplement how most of the time when people are annoyed it will go unsaid even though it is felt.
I believe that this fear is about being burden to others, you did a nice job with showing your fear because your friend looks very annoyed with you and doesn't want to help you. I really like how your friends face shows his emotions on how he feels, possibly if you looked back and smiled at him, it would make the fear stand out more.
